Doctor Sleep Synopsis
Following the events of The Shining, Danny Torrance remains psychologically traumatized as his mother Wendy slowly recovers from her injuries. Angry ghosts from the Overlook Hotel eventually find Danny, including the woman from Room 237. Dick Hallorann, the Overlook's chef, teaches Danny to create lockboxes in his mind to contain the ghosts, including that of former Overlook owner Horace Derwent.

As an adult, Danny (now going simply by Dan) takes up his father's legacy of anger and alcoholism. Dan drifts for decades, but eventually makes his way to New Hampshire and decides to give up drinking. Dan settles in the small town of Frazier, working first at a tourist attraction and then at a hospice, and attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. His psychic "shining" abilities, long suppressed by his drinking, re-emerge and allow him to provide comfort to dying patients. Aided by a cat who can sense when someone is about to die, Dan acquires the nickname "Doctor Sleep."

In the meantime, Abra Stone, a baby girl born shortly before the September 11 attacks, begins to manifest psychic powers of her own, She slowly and unintentionally establishes a telepathic bond with Dan; as she grows, the contact becomes more conscious and voluntary and her shining grows stronger than his. One night, Abra psychically witnesses the ritual torture and murder of a boy by the True Knot, a group of quasi-immortals who wander across America and periodically feed on "steam," a psychic essence that children with the shining produce when they are tortured to death. Horrified, Abra telepathically reaches out for Dan, but they are unable to do anything for the boy. The True Knot's leader, Rose the Hat, becomes aware of Abra's existence and initially views her as a threat, but she later formulates a plan to kidnap Abra and keep her alive so she can produce large amounts of steam for them.

The members of the True Knot start to sicken and die of measles, contracted from one of their victims, and believe that Abra's steam can cure them. Abra asks for Dan's help, and he reveals his connection with Abra to her father David and their family doctor, John Dalton. Angry and skeptical at first, David starts to believe Dan and agrees to go along with his plan to save Abra. With the help of Billy Freeman, one of Dan's friends, they kill the first team of kidnappers; however, Dan soon realizes that Rose will not stop pursuing Abra, as she now wants revenge for the deaths of her fellow travelers. He visits Abra's great-grandmother Concetta, who is dying of cancer, and telepathically learns from her that he and Abra's mother Lucy are half-siblings with the same father. As Concetta dies, Dan takes her diseased steam into himself.

Following another kidnapping attempt that Abra foils with Dan's telepathic help, she baits Rose into confronting her at the location where the Overlook once stood in Colorado. Dan and Billy show up in her place, while Abra helps them using her astral projection. Dan releases the steam collected from Concetta to the group of True Knot members lying in wait, killing all of them. He frees the ghost of Horace Derwent to kill the last member waiting to ambush him and Abra, and the two fight Rose in a long psychic struggle. With help from Billy and the ghost of Dan's father, they push Rose off an observation platform to her death.

In the epilogue, Dan celebrates fifteen years of sobriety and attends Abra's fifteenth birthday party. He tells her about the patterns of alcoholism and violent behavior that run in his family, and warns her not to repeat them by starting to drink or submitting to rage. Abra agrees that she will behave, but before they can finish the conversation, Dan is called back to his hospice, where he comforts a dying colleague who had antagonized him in the past.

Sycamore Row Synopsis
According to USA Today, "Jake Brigance returns to the courtroom in a 'dramatic showdown as Ford County again confronts its tortured history.'"

Set in fictional Clanton, Mississippi, three years after the sensational events in the trial of Carl Lee Hailey (A Time to Kill) an employee of Mr Seth Hubbard is instructed to meet his boss at a location by a Sycamore tree at 2PM on a Sunday.

The employee finds Mr. Hubbard dead, hung from a tree because his terminal lung cancer was too painful and he was ready to end it. Accompanied with the body are very specific funeral and burial instructions.

In his office, we re-join Jake Brigance who has lost his secretary, home, and dog thanks to the KKK who tried to intimidate him during the Hailey trial, Brigance is currently tied up in litigation with the Insurance Company after his house was burnt down and has little to no money to show from the Hailey trial. He receives a letter from Seth Hubbard.

Brigance opens the letter and reads that Mr. Hubbard has written a new holographic will that renounces one he wrote a year ago in which he had left money to his daughter and son as well as their grandchildren.

In his holographic will, Mr. Hubbard stipulates that his children will receive nothing from the will, five percent will be given to his Church, while the other five percent will be left for his brother. The remaining 90% is to be given to his black housekeeper Letitia (Lettie) Lang and that the will must be filed following the funeral and not a moment sooner so his children, who rarely visited him during his cancer, can put on a show then be left with nothing.

Mr Hubbard notes that his children will contest it because they are greedy and that Mr. Brigance has to do whatever it takes to make sure the holographic will is the enforced will. He says he chose Jake because of the admirable work that Jake did at the Hailey trial.

After a hotly contested battle which yields many twists and turns and the trial looks lost for Brigance and Lang, a sensational deposition given by Mr Hubbard's brother, Ancil, explains why Mr Hubbard left the money to his housekeeper and the significance of the Sycamore Tree which Mr Hubbard hung himself on.

Inferno Synopsis
A Harvard University professor Robert Langdon wakes up in a hospital with a head wound and no memory of the last few days. His last memory is walking on the Harvard campus, but he quickly realizes that he is now in Florence. Sienna Brooks, one of the doctors tending to him, tells him he suffered a concussion from being grazed by a bullet and had stumbled into the emergency ward. Suddenly, Vayentha, a female assassin who has been following Robert, breaks into the hospital, shoots the doctor in charge of Robert's care, and approaches Robert's room. Sienna grabs Robert and they flee to her apartment.

After Sienna recounts the details of his admission to hospital, Robert finds a cylinder with a biohazard sign in his jacket and decides to call the U.S. consulate. He is told that they are searching for him and want his location. Per Sienna's guidance, Robert gives them a location across the street from Sienna's apartment to avoid getting Sienna more involved in his mysterious situation than she already is. Soon, Robert sees an armed Vayentha pull up to the location Robert gave the consulate. At this point Sienna and Robert believe the U.S. government wants to kill him.

Robert decides to open the container and finds a small medieval bone cylinder fitted with a hi-tech projector that displays a modified version of Botticelli's Map of Hell. At the bottom of the illumination are the words "The truth can be glimpsed only through the eyes of death." Suddenly, soldiers raid Sienna's building; Sienna and Robert narrowly escape.
Robert and Sienna head toward the Old City, believing the cylinder must have something to do with Dante. However, they find that Florentine police and Carabinieri officers have sealed the bridges and are searching for them. They run into a construction site near the Boboli Gardens where Robert illuminates the modified "Map of Hell" again, notices that individual letters, which collectively spell "CATROVACER," have been added to each of the ten layers of the Malebolge, and that the layers have been rearranged. Moving them back to the order in the original Botticelli "Map of Hell" yields the words "CERCA TROVA". Robert recognizes these are the same words on the painting The Battle of Marciano by Vasari, located in the Palazzo Vecchio. Robert and Sienna manage to evade the soldiers and get into the Old City using the Vasari Corridor.

Robert stands in front of The Battle of Marciano trying to figure out where to go next by connecting the "eyes of death" phrase in the modified "Map of Hell" with his location. A custodian sees Robert snooping around and gets the director of the museum in the Palazzo Vecchio, Marta Alvarez. Marta recognizes Robert, having met him and Ignazio Busoni, the director of Il Duomo, the previous night. She leads Robert and Sienna up a set of stairs by The Battle of Marciano, and Robert realizes the top of the stairs is on the same level as the words "cerca trova" in the The Battle of Marciano painting. Marta tells Robert that she showed them Dante's death mask the previous night, which sits in a room down the hall from the Battle of Marciano painting. Robert realizes he is retracing his own steps from the previous night. Marta takes Robert and Sienna to the mask who find that it's gone. They look at security footage and see Robert himself and Ignazio stealing the mask. The museum guards turn on Robert and Sienna. At this moment, Marta calls Ignazio's office to question him but is greeted by his secretary, who informs Marta that Ignazio died of a heart attack the other night but left a message for Robert moments before he died. Ignazio's secretary asks to speak with Robert and plays to him Ignazio's message. In it Ignazio esoterically tells Robert where the mask is hidden, referring to "Paradise 25."

Robert and Sienna escape the guards, but the soldiers arrive. They cross the attic over the Apotheosis of Cosimo I, where Sienna pushes Vayentha to her death. Robert connects the phrase "Paradise 25" to the Florence Baptistry, where he and Sienna find the Dante mask along with a riddle from its current owner, a billionaire geneticist named Bertrand Zobrist. Sienna later explains that Zobrist was a geneticist who advocated the halting of humanity's growth, due to its out of control population. And that he was rumored to be working on a means to do so using an engineered disease. A man named Jonathan Ferris, with a large bruise on his chest which he hides from the two, and a severe rash on his face, claiming to be from the World Health Organization (WHO), comes and helps them escape the soldiers. They follow the riddle to Venice, where Ferris suddenly falls unconscious, with Sienna claiming he is suffering from massive internal bleeding, causing Langdon to suspect Ferris has been infected with Zobrist's plague. Robert is captured by a group of black-clad soldiers while Sienna escapes.

Robert is taken to Elizabeth Sinskey, the director-general of the WHO, and is given an explanation of what is going on: Zobrist, who committed suicide the week before, was a brilliant geneticist and Dante fanatic who has supposedly developed a new biological plague that will kill off a large portion of the world's population in order to quickly solve the problem of the world's impending overpopulation. Elizabeth raided Zobrist's safe deposit box, found the cylinder, and flew Robert to Florence to follow the clues. However, Robert stopped communicating with Elizabeth after meeting with Marta and Ignazio, and the WHO feared he betrayed them and was working with Zobrist to unleash the plague. The soldiers were the WHO's emergency response team and never meant to kill Robert.

Zobrist had paid a shadowy consulting group called The Consortium to protect the cylinder until a certain date. He also left a disturbing video filled with Dante imagery, which also showed a picture of the plague itself, kept in a hidden underwater location, within a slowly dissolving bag. The video claims that the world will be changed the following morning. When Elizabeth took it away, they were obligated to protect whatever the bone cylinder pointed to. They kidnapped Robert after the meeting with Marta and Ignazio, but Robert hadn't yet solved the whole riddle. They gave Robert benzodiazepine drugs to erase his short-term memory, created a fake head wound, and staged every event up to this point so that Robert would be motivated to solve it. Sienna, Vayentha, and Ferris are all actors working for The Consortium; the call to the U.S. consulate was also staged. The leader of The Consortium, having become aware of the bioterrorism plot, has agreed to cooperate with the WHO. Ferris's rash was due to an allergic reaction to the spirit gum he as part of the disguise as the doctor Vayentha "murdered". His bruises were because the squib used to simulate him being shot in the chest misfired and broke his ribs. He collapsed in Venice because he had been ordered to detain Sienna, as the Provost (Consortium head) had allied with Sinskey, with Sienna realizing and punching him in his damaged ribs.

Sienna goes rogue, and The Consortium realizes she was a secret supporter and lover of Zobrist. She learned where the plague is being kept after Robert solved the riddle and acquires a private jet to get to it before everyone else. Robert, the WHO, and The Consortium, team up to stop her. From watching Zobrist's video they conclude that the bag containing the plague will be fully dissolved by the date the video specifies, and that Zobrist's clues point to its location: the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, where Enrico Dandolo is buried. Robert and the others find the plague is in the Cistern, but discover that Sienna is already there. The bag that held the plague had already been broken, presumably spreading through the outer world via visiting tourists. Sienna runs out of the Cistern yelling something in Turkish, which causes panic among the tourists who stampede out into the city, while Langdon gives chase.

It is discovered Sienna didn't puncture the bag; it was water soluble and had dissolved one week previously in the Cistern waters, meaning that the whole world has already been infected. The date specified in Zobrist's video was the mathematical calculation of when the entire world would be infected. It is also discovered that Sienna was trying to stop the virus herself, but didn't trust the WHO because samples of the virus would certainly find their way into the hands of governments performing weapons research. The leader of The Consortium tries to escape WHO custody with help from disguised underlings, but is caught later by Turkish police. It is implied that The Consortium will be investigated and ruined. Sienna receives amnesty in exchange for working with the WHO to address the crisis, since she is a medical doctor and has extensive knowledge of Zobrist's research and work.

The plague that Zobrist created is revealed to be a vector virus that randomly activates to employ DNA modification to cause sterility in 1/3 of humans. Even with future genetic engineering technology, changing the human genome back would be hazardous. The human race, therefore, has been forced into a new age.

What is The Goldfinch?

The Goldfinch is the third novel from Donna Tartt, her first in 11 years. In February 2013, the New York Observer announced that Tartt's long-awaited third novel, titled The Goldfinch, was set for publication on October 22, 2013 after originally being slated for publication in September 2008. The book was selected as one of the 10 Best Books of 2013 by the editors of the New York Times Book Review.

The Goldfinch Synopsis
A thirteen-year-old boy in New York City, Theodore "Theo" Decker, survives a terrorist bombing attack in an art museum that takes the life of his mother (and dozens of other art-loving citizens). His father wasn't there, having deserted the family some time prior to these events. Theo adored his energetic, beautiful mother - as did many other people in Manhattan - and thinks of his father as an alcoholic, occasionally abusive, and as a thief. Theo accepts a ring and an enigmatic message given to him by a man, elderly Welton "Welty" Blackwell, who dies in the rubble of the explosion. Theo is willing to unravel the puzzle, because (before the bomb went off) he had found himself fascinated by a red-headed girl, Pippa, also at the Museum that day and who was somehow related to the old man, and on her account, he will grant the dying man's last request. Believing that the old man, Welty, is pointing at a painting (The Goldfinch) on the wall, Theo takes that also in his panicked escape. The taking of these items - one handed over freely, a family heirloom, the other a literally "priceless" painting by Carel Fabritius - was done by Theo in a state of terror, concussion, and shock, with no ability to reason how these minor-seeming actions would influence the rest of his life. Alone and determined to avoid being taken in by the city as an orphan, Theo lives with a school friend, Andy Barbour, and his family (Mr. Barbour, a pleasant man as long as he takes his prescribed medication; Mrs. Barbour, a seemingly chilly but kind socialite who likes Theo; Platt, the oldest son, a boarding school bully; Andy, 14, a genius nerd; Kitsey, 9, "a candyfloss Disney Princess"; and Toddy, the youngest, who, Theo learns many years later, decided at an early age to join local government to assist disadvantaged youths, because he was impressed by Theo's disastrous background). Theo lives in the Barbours' elegant house for several months and is fairly happy there (despite his continuing nightmares and posttraumatic stress disorder). Unbeknownst to the Barbours, Theo has carried out the last wishes of the dying man ("Welty") and becomes friends with James "Hobie" Hobart, Welty's partner. Mrs. Barbour, who has always seemed rather "icy" to Theo, but is much fonder of him than he realized, generously invites him to join the family for their summer holidays in Maine. Theo is delighted. These dreams, of reading books and goofing off with Andy, shatter when his deadbeat dad, Larry Decker, along with Larry's new girlfriend, Xandra, show up at the Barbours' estate and whisks him (and the painting) away to Las Vegas. In Las Vegas, Theo feels rootless. He is surprised by the new chumminess of his father, who earns a living and pays for a large home outside Vegas with gambling wins. He is also pleased to make a new friend, Boris, who sits next to him in literature class. After a discussion in class of Henry David Thoreau's Walden, which they like and many classmates dislike, they become best friends. This means that, in light of the fact that they both have absentee parents, they spend most of their afternoons drinking beer or vodka, feeding themselves from shoplifted store groceries, using marijuana and other illegal drugs, talking from night to dawn, and giving friendship to Popper, Xandra's neglected Maltese puppy. But Larry Decker, the gambling father, who is generous while winning, finds himself in debt to a crime syndicate to the amount of $50,000. He begs Theo to phone a New York attorney in order to request some funds; the attorney, Mr. Bracegirdle, smells a rat and tells Theo that he cannot release any funds. Events move rapidly then: Knowing that thugs are after him, Larry gets drunk and heads west from Vegas, then dies in a car collision. It is unclear whether this is mere poor luck or whether the organized crime ring arranged it. At any rate, Theo knows he must leave town at once, or be trapped in some Nevada Family Services nightmare. Theo and Boris steal some money from Xandra (Theo also reclaims some earrings belonging to his own mother, which his father had stolen and given to Xandra), and Boris finds a stash of cocaine, which Boris steals. Theo is determined to run away that night. Boris begs him to stay one more day (for excellent reasons explained hundreds of pages later), but Theo wants to return to New York, and his friends, that minute. When his pleas go unheard, Boris kisses Theo and lets him go. After a bus ride across the country, filled with tension because Theo has decided to bring Popper (No animals on the bus!), Theo returns to New York. He sees Mr. Barbour on the street and has great relief and hope, but Barbour (no longer on his medications), acts wildly and shuns him. Theo then shows up at Hobie's door, and at this point is shivering and delirious with influenza. Pippa is there, as well as Hobie, and they welcome him and give him a place to stay. Years later, Theo has become a full partner in Hobart's antiques and furniture-repairing business. Tartt informs her readers that eight years have passed - making Theo 26 years old at the time he is writing the confessional novel - and Theo has new troubles. He is addicted to prescribed medications, which he buys on the street. He has saved Hobie from bankruptcy, but he did so by selling faked pieces of furniture, and now one of those buyers (Lucius Reeve) is attempting blackmail. Reeve has figured out that Theo was in the same museum room with The Goldfinch and wants it for himself. Theo is racked by guilt over selling fakes, but he is also preoccupied with his wedding arrangements with Kitsey Barbour. (Theo never stopped loving Pippa, but he learns that Kitsey has never stopped loving Tom Cable, a criminal teenager with whom Theo attended high school.) While these nerve-wracking events occur, Boris reappears in Theo's life. Boris admits that he had stolen the painting The Goldfinch back in high school, which Theo never realized, as he'd stashed what he thought was the painting in a storage facility. Boris honestly believes that the painting deserves to remain with Theo, who for a long time has been racking his brains to figure out how to return The Goldfinch to the proper authorities. Now Boris has a plan to return The Goldfinch to Theo. The plan involves flying to Amsterdam and meeting with men who are holding the painting; Boris and his henchmen show up with guns and take both the painting and the bad guys' guns. However, when they return to their rendezvous point, enemies appear. There is a shoot-out, during which Boris is shot in the arm and Theo shoots the killer. Despite this dramatic climax to the novel, both Boris and Theo end up wealthy because they are able to announce to the art recovery police that they have information about some of the missing paintings, and they are richly rewarded.
